Ruby's husband, Dewitt, was responsible for many bridges that have been built in North Carolina. Because of his profession, the family often moved to new locations across the state. In 1960, however, Dewitt traded his bridge building hat for a bridge state inspector's hat when he began working for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Ruby felt that was a perfect opportunity to do something she had long wanted to do--become a cosmetologist. She finished her formal training in 1962 and started her own beauty shop, where she worked for the next fifteen years. Her love of people was a factor in choosing her next career, real estate. She became an agent in 1980 and received her broker's license in 1982. In addition to that career, she spent time as a part time instructor in Health and Nutrition at Isothermal Community College and served on the Ellenboro Town Board.
In 1997, Ruby and Dewitt decided the house in Ellenboro, that had served them well, was getting to be more house than they wanted or needed. They felt it was time to move. So after much searching, 1998 found the Lowery's in Eastwood Village. They decided that Eastwood Village with its thirty-one units, was just the friendly atmosphere they were looking for. The community's beautiful landscaping, the pool, the clubhouse, the security and assured maintenance were all important features in a new house. But it was the warm gracious people in the Village that makes Eastwood Village the place they wanted to call home. When asked, they both agreed that they have no regrets in moving.
Ruby settled into the Village quickly and soon was elected as one of the five board members of the community. She currently enjoys serving as the president of the Village. Her other passions include membership at Bethel Baptist Church, where she is chairman of the community missions, chairman of the parsonage committee, and treasurer of her Sunday School class. Besides her church activities, she is member of the Home Maker's Association in Rutherford County, enjoys reading and traveling, and enjoys making award-winning baskets with her husband.
When asked to describe herself, she simply said, "My life is full with a wonderful family and friends and many enjoyable activities to keep me busy. I feel like a very lucky person."
